What to Wear for Your Headshot Session: A Tucson Photographer's Style Guide

When clients book a headshot session with Lens Lyric Photography here in Tucson, AZ, one of the first questions I hear is: “What should I wear?” It’s a great question — and one that deserves a thoughtful answer, because your outfit can make or break the final image. Whether you’re updating your LinkedIn profile, building a professional portfolio, or refreshing your business brand, what you wear communicates just as much as your expression does.

Here’s my tried-and-true guide to dressing for headshot success.

Choose Solid Colors Over Busy Patterns

When it comes to headshots, simplicity wins every time. Solid, rich colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus exactly where it belongs — on your face. Deep blues, burgundies, forest greens, soft grays, and classic navy are all excellent choices. These tones complement a wide range of skin tones and look polished against both light and dark backgrounds.

Patterns — think bold stripes, large florals, or busy plaids — can distract the eye and date your photo quickly. Small subtle textures, like a fine herringbone or a lightly textured knit, can actually add dimension. But as a general rule, if you’re unsure between a print and a solid, go with the solid.

As your Tucson photographer, I’ll also be happy to review outfit options before your session if you send me a photo — that’s part of what we do at Lens Lyric Photography to make sure you feel confident walking in.

Fit Matters More Than You Think

A great-fitting outfit will always photograph better than an expensive one that doesn’t fit well. Before your session, try on your planned outfits and sit down, stand up, and move around in them. Do they bunch, gap, or pull?

For women, structured tops and blazers tend to photograph especially well, as they create clean lines. V-necks and scoop necks can be very flattering. For men, a well-fitted button-down is always a safe choice. Make sure your collar lies flat and your shirt is freshly pressed. If you’re going tie-less, leave the top button undone for a polished but approachable look.

Whatever industry you’re in — real estate, medicine, entrepreneurship, or the creative field — the best headshot outfit is one that feels authentically you, while still looking sharp and intentional.

Mind the Details: Jewelry, Accessories & Grooming

The camera picks up everything, including wrinkles, stray hairs, and distracting jewelry. A few tips to keep in mind: iron or steam your outfit the night before. Keep jewelry simple and classic — stud earrings, a simple necklace, or a clean watch face work best. Get a haircut 1–2 weeks before your session so your hair has time to settle naturally. For makeup, aim for polished but natural — avoid heavy contouring unless that’s authentically part of your brand. And bring a lint roller on shoot day — it’s a lifesaver.

Bring a Few Options

One of my top pieces of advice is to bring two or three outfit choices. You don’t need a full wardrobe — just a couple of variations. A blazer, a solid shirt without the blazer, and something a bit more casual gives us flexibility. Tucson’s beautiful natural light and diverse backdrops work beautifully year-round, and a second outfit can shift the entire feel of the shoot — from corporate and polished to warm and approachable.
